A'Theism

The theists believe that their existence would not be possible without God.
But, there would be no atheists too if there was no God !

The Hindu spells his god differently; a Christian, his; a Parsi, his and so on.
Atheists are people who do not idolize the concept. They are the people who spell god differently.
Me; You; Hope; Belief; Faith; Freedom; Conscience; Love et cetera.
The theists channelize the likes through the personification called GOD!

Hence its the god that keeps everyone going.

God is a human construct. The concept is used to explain the unexplainable in our short, miserable lives. it is also used to enforce values which will ensure the continuance of a certain way of life. The 'god' concept is what keeps humans from taking responsibility for their decisions. Once we reject the concept of god, we realize that our life is what we make of it. And with this realization comes responsibility.

The concept of god brought discipline in people's life.. When Humans came to existence, they behaved like animals... they were driven by animal instincts( fear, hunger, sex). The Concept of God taught us to repect our fellow humans... we now know to differentiate between mother, wife and sister. I completely agree with your argument.. as long as aethists stick to the higher objectives( acting socially responsible)... God can be attributed to anything in this world...

The real theist spells god only by one word. GOD. For him everything in the word is a manifestation of god. A real Atheist on the other hand derides faith by only one word. GOD. For him nothing is a manifestation of god other than Himself. Everything else is a big bundle of erudite, sofa sophistry.

The phenomena called god was probably created to instil non-cannibal ways to live. For instance, lets say out of many reasons one could be "if you hurt someone, you will be punished by god". Basically to bring in a culture and humane way to live life. Now, ironically the concept of god and religion itself is being the main reason for bloodshed. So, I believe man created god for a good reason. However, we cannot write off the possibilty of any supernatural force having some effect on the universe/multiverse. Wonderful blog, keep writing !!! :)

well...when you talk about an atheist conceptualising God in every ascpect of life except in a concrete form you are talking nothing but another beleif in God. Adi Shankar or Shankarcharya also propounded a non-dualistic theory called "aduvait vaad" and talked about the concept of "aham brahmasmi" or each one being a divine form....

anyways i would wanna talk about this more...may be you can email me dhritimaan@gmail.com.....

Atheism is simply the absence of belief in a supernatural entity. It is similar to Abunnyism. If a few people believe in the omniscience and omnipresence of the cosmic Bunny, Abunnyists simply state that such unfalsifiable hypotheses hold no place in rationality.

Yes, there is a place for religion and the belief in God in this world. Most people need such a faith. But saying if God didn't exist, Atheist doesn't exist is false. Did you ever consider the contrapositive ?

As a logical thought experiment, consider that god didn't exist, and also consider that noone believed in any supernatural entity. What would you call the people of this world ?

Interesting article and a convincing argument.
An atheist I believe does not scorn the idea of god itself, but the ritualistic relation of God to any particular subject or object. In a way, it's even better - by not attaching a specific picture to god he realizes the potential Brahman in himself and people around him. So starngely, By Advaithic standards he'd be closer to god than the so called believer.

It is a common contention between theists and atheists as who holds the torch for "burden of proof." - theists? atheists? both? neither?
Obviously Theists proof cannot be denied in saying that GOD exits. They make at least one claim to it.But their assertions have to reasonable rite...so as to support this...they depend on nature of GOD chosen for their claims. As the case with any other claim the support goes with the nature of the object chosen. By luck or no luck there is no one such catch that all proofs suffice all GODS. Unless a person is capable of explaining his belief we would never know have we found it....One good thing is that the more the vague and ambiguous description the more the chance for evidence. If one doesn't have clear idea of "GOD EXISTS" then its nothing to us rather than English words.

Ahh...now for Atheist...The moment you say this they are the ones who necessarily making any claim about world neither GOD. Of course, that isn't going to be the limit of the average atheist's beliefs and nonbeliefs. For example, an atheist might deny the existence of some gods - and that denial is itself a claim which warrants justification and support, if it is questioned. Other atheists might not deny outright a particular god, but will deny certain associated claims made in relation to belief in that god. For example, an atheist might assert that an alleged god might exist - but that if it does, it cannot be omnibenevolent. Or an atheist might accept that, if a god exists, it certainly didn't create the world in seven days.

At last the burden of proof is on whoever is making the claims. This is always at least the theist, since they are by definition making at least one claim about at least one god. This is sometimes on the atheist, if they choose to deny something specific. The justification of atheism, if required, can only proceed from whatever is fundamental and necessary to atheism. As long as atheism is simply non belief, that means that little or no justification is required, at least early on. Only after the theist has presented coherent and rational arguments might the atheist need to explain why she does not accept them. At that point, justification of atheism is based upon inadequate justification for theism.

Hi - I am Srini's friend and couldn't help notice this article on your blog.

The blog was so interesting that I read all the 15 comments and have to say that Suresh's comments are the closest to what my opinion is on this topic.

Some strong opinions that I have on this subject are:

a) "GOD" is commonly used as the cause for any kind of DIVIDE

b) As a race endowed with power to think, we have perceptions and no 2 opinions are similar. Unfortunately, this basic premise renders itself to so many interpretations of GOD. Sadly, the most common form of interpretation is FEAR. Anything you do/don't do is because GOD will punish!

c) Worship - The significance of Worship to a logical mind is that of "I'll do this, you please do this". I have seldom met people who can rationale the reasons behind worship.

One of the quintessential questions. Its all a matter of perspective. As a person grows older,he/she tends to cling on to(rather incorporate) a belief to make life and their existance more meaningful. It might be God,or anything else.Be it helping the poor, joining an NGO.

Btw, this is Neha. :)

That which the tongue speak and which cannot be spoken by the tongue that alone is God, not what people worship. That which the mind thinks but cannot be thought by the mind that alone is God. that which the eye sees but not cannot be seen by the eyes that alone is god, not what people worship. If you think you know God, you know very little. All we know is ideas and images of God, I do not know God, nor can i say i do not know. If you understand the meaning of I neither know or don't know; you understand God. Those who realise that God cannot be known; truly know, those who think they know; know nothing. The ignorant thing that god can be grasped by the mind; the wise know it beyound knowledge. When you see that god acts through you in every movement of mind and body you attain true freedom when you realise the truth, you enter eternal life.
